Dr. Markku Wilenius Senior Vice President, Allianz Professor, Finland Futures Reseach Centre, Turku School of Economics Sustainable Leadership |
Professor Dr. Markku Wilenius, born in 1961, is currently senior advisor to Allianz SE and professor of futures studies at the University of Turku, Finland. He joined Allianz December 2007 and last year he headed trend assessment & strategy unit in Allianz SE Economic Research & Corporate Development in Allianz headquarters in Munich, Germany. Allianz is one of the biggest insurance companies and investors in the world. His principal responsibilities and occupations are strategic research, long-term trends and their implications, new business models, the strategic issues around sustainable development and fundamental customer needs.
Wilenius was educated in the Universities of Jyväskylä and Helsinki Finland, and prior to that, trained and worked as a Garden Architect. His professional career in the research field began from participating in a research programme on Climate Change (1990 – 1995). Since joining and directing the Finland Futures Research Centre at the Turku School of Economics, his interests developed towards issues such as strategic leadership and bringing foresight into both organisations and the society, which he puts into practice by consulting different types of organisations.
Professor Wilenius has had a deep interest in understanding how culture can be seen more clearly as an asset for the whole society as well as for companies. He directed a large research programme and published “Towards Creative Economy” upon the findings. He has also a large research project “Managing Creative Knowledge Capital”, which analysed foresight, innovation and renewal capability as factors of strategic competitiveness in six influential Finnish companies. Another target was the development of foresight methods for mastering innovation and leadership processes, aiming to bring them to a new level of competence in the participating companies. The future of the Media as his latest research project provides understanding on how major media corporations see the future of their particular field. Together with Dr. Nando Malmelin, he published a book on the theme, called “The Future of Responsible Media” in February 2008. He is probably the only Professor of Futures Studies in the world, acting internationally e.g. as Vice-Chair in the European Futurists Conference Advisory Board, an Associate in a world-wide network of values consultants, and member of the Club of Rome. He is the chairman of three foundation and owner of two companies in Finland. In 2001, he was awarded the international Aurelio Peccei –prize by L’eta Verde organisation, based in Rome. He is married and have two sons. His hobbies include gardening, playing bass and all kinds of outdoor activities.
